The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska (Tribe) is inviting qualified Architectural and Engineering Firms to provide design, engineering, and construction documentation services for a modular meat processing facility on tribal land in Knox County, Nebraska.
The facility will focus on the humane and culturally appropriate harvesting of buffalo and indigenous animals, aligning with the Tribe’s food sovereignty initiatives. This project is a key component in the Tribe’s vision for a sustainable food system that integrates traditional practices with modern techniques, empowering the Tribe to reclaim its food security and promote self-governance.
This modular meat processing facility will play a crucial role in the Tribe’s efforts to achieve food sovereignty, offering a source of nutritious, lean protein for more than 5,500 Ponca members and local communities. By incorporating sustainable practices and respecting cultural values, the facility will focus on the entire lifecycle of animal processing –ensuring that buffalo and other indigenous species are humanely harvested, processed, stored, and distributed to the community. The key goals of this facility are humane handling and processing, Indigenous-informed design, sustainability, and cold storage and distribution.
